I have been privileged to work with over 1,000 students in 30 middle and high schools across Connecticut. I’ve served as a mentor for middle school girls in Waterbury through Go LiveGirl’s Confidence Club, taught poetry workshops for numerous high school classes, and curated programming for high school students as coordinator for Connecticut’s Poetry Out Loud Program. These curated programs include creative writing mentorship opportunities for students to perform professionally alongside their teaching artist mentors. The work includes creating, producing, and directing student-centered filmed productions to help build their creative portfolios.
Of all that I’ve been afforded the time and resources to create, the one thing I could not have planned was the growth of our creative community. It has made students feel safe in their creative vulnerability and supported in their life journey. What I do would not be possible without the teachers, schools, and organizations that have invited me to collaborate with them. It would not exist without the teaching artists who joined together to create the village for our youth, and it would not continue to be possible without the parents and students who continue to prove that these opportunities are necessary and valued.
